Government of India should help migrants trapped abroad: Badal


Chandigarh: Shiromani Akali Dal President Sukhbir Singh Badal requested Prime Minister Narendra Modi to direct Indian missions to help migrants and Punjabis stranded abroad due to Corona epidemic.

Badal, in a statement issued here today, has asked the Indian government to set up a ‘special cell’ with helpline numbers for Punjabi migrants inside all Indian missions abroad, especially in Canada, USA, England, Italy, Spain, France, Germany. He said that a large number of Sikhs live in the Middle East, special cells should be started to help them. Badal has urged the Prime Minister and the Foreign Minister to ensure that expatriates, especially Punjabis, feel that the government of their own country stands firmly with them in this hour of need. The SAD leader has requested the Indian government to direct all Indian missions abroad to contact political and community leaders, besides non-governmental and social service organizations, to provide assistance to people of Indian origin.

Badal directed the party’s main office in Chandigarh to be constantly aware that he would be present 24 hours to assist Punjabis abroad. He said, “We should be ready to assist Punjabis in every situation through the Government of India and Indian Missions abroad.”
