CPI (M) activist commits self-immolation, anti-CAA prescription in pouch

Indore: A 72-year-old activist of the Communist Party of India-Marxist allegedly set himself on fire here on Friday night. Police have received printed leaflets in protest against the amended Citizenship Act (CAA) from their bags lying on the spot. Nirmal Kumar Sriwas, in-charge of Tukoganj police station, said that Rameshchandra Prajapat (72) allegedly set himself on fire at the Geeta Bhawan intersection by spraying flammable material. He said that Prajapat, who was severely scorched in self-immolation, has been admitted to Government Maharaja Yashwantrao Hospital in critical condition.

“The patient is currently not in a position to give a statement. It is not yet clear why he set himself on fire,” said Srivas. The station in-charge confirmed that Prajapat’s bag found on the spot had received some pamphlets on which things were printed in opposition to the CAA etc. He, however, said, “We are investigating the matter. At the moment it is too early to add these papers because of Prajapat’s self-immolation.” CPI-M sources said that Prajapat was continuously attending protests in different places in the city to protest against the CAA.
