Chandigarh, [Indrapreet Singh]. The issue of women doing kirtan in Shri Darbar Sahib haonce again become hot in Sikh politics. The issue had remained silent for the last two decades, but on Thursday, the proposal was given by the Rural Development and Panchayat Minister Trupt Rajinder Singh Bajwa to the Assembly, which has been passed after considerable debate. The debate in political circles has intensified regarding this proposal. Former Jathedars and SGPC officials of Shri Akal Takht Sahib have described this Prasav as interfering in the affairs of Sikhs.

Former Jathedars of Shri Akal Takht termed the government’s proposal as interference in the affairs of Sikhs.

It is worth noting that this issue was raised even two decades ago, when the then head of SGPC, Jathedar Gurcharan Singh Tohra opposed it, saying that it was a violation of Guru’s dignity and tradition. Amarinder Singh, who is close to him and a member of SGPC, is still firm that the permission of women to perform kirtan inside Sri Darbar Sahib has not been given since the time of Guru Arjun Dev Ji.

On the other hand, SGPC general secretary Kiranjot Kaur has advocated for women to perform kirtan in Darbar Sahib, but has opposed bringing such a proposal from the government. He has described it as a direct intervention of the government in Sikhism.

When the issue came up two decades ago, the then chairman of SGPC, Tohra protested.

Former SGPC member Amarinder Singh says that Guru Arjun Dev ji started doing kirtan in Darbar Sahib, even then women never performed kirtan there. It is not right to break the dignity of Guru Sahib four hundred years old. It is not that only women are not allowed, but no non-Amritdhari Sikh is also allowed to perform Kirtan.

He said that the desire to perform Kirtan here was also expressed by the descendants of Bhai Mardana, even then it was said that he can do this in Manji Sahib Diwan Hall, but not inside Darbar Sahib. He said that allowing women not to perform kirtan inside the sole Darbar Sahib does not abolish women’s rights. This can be done in Manji Sahib Diwan Hall, which is located near Darbar Sahib.

It is noteworthy that Yogi Harbhajan Singh had also expressed such desire but even then it was opposed. Now this controversy has arisen once again. It is noteworthy that women also do not have the right to morning bath service.

Women have the right to do kirtan: Kiranjot Kaur

Bibi Kiranjot Kaur does not agree with former SGPC member Amkshardar Singh. He says that the Mahants were allowed to not allow women to perform kirtan and the matter which does not meet the Gurmati principle should be changed. Women have every right to perform kirtan. He said that I do not understand why the government is bringing such a proposal. The government has no right to do so. This is the work of SGPC

Politics happening in religion: Giani Raghubir Singh

Jathedar Giani Raghubir Singh of Takht Shri Kesgarh Sahib said that the matter of giving women the right to perform kirtan is a personal matter of Sikh community. This can be decided only on Shri Akal Takht Sahib. Passing such a resolution in the Legislative Assembly is an interference of politics in religion.

Take the decision of Singh Sahib: Giani Joginder Singh

Giani Joginder Singh Vedanti, former Jathedar of Shri Akal Takht Sahib said that the matter is associated with the dignity of Sikhism. The controversy of women doing kirtan in Sri Harimandir Sahib is quite old. A religious committee should be formed to discuss Sikh intellectuals and religious scholars on this. Who should take a decision in this regard and inform Akal Takht Sahib. After this, five Singh Sahib decide on it. Religious decisions should not be taken in the assembly.

Only Sikh community can take such decisions: Bhai Ranjit Singh

Bhai Ranjit Singh, former Jathedar of Shri Akal Takht Sahib, says that the principles of SGPC and Shri Akal Takht Sahib have been officialized on behalf of the Badal family. The government interference in both the institutes had increased and the result is that this resolution has been passed in the Punjab Assembly today. The decision to allow women to perform kirtans is an issue entirely associated with Sikhism. Only Sikh community and Sikh intellectuals can take this decision. The government’s interference is wrong. Those sitting on SGPC and Takht Sahib have no courage to take the decision of the community. This is the reason why governments are taking decisions in legislatures related to this.

Women should get rights: Giani Kewal Singh

Gyani Kewal Singh, former Jathedar of Takht Sri Damdama Sahib, said that it is a matter of principles of Sikhism. In Sikhism, women have equal rights as men. This honor has been given by Guru Sahib. The SGPC and Shri Akal Takht Sahib should also take a decision to allow women to perform kirtan at Sri Darbar Sahib on the 550th Prakash Parv of Guru Sahib. There is no such prohibition in Rahat Maryada that women cannot do kirtan.
