New Delhi, IANS. The central government may announce the name of the country’s first Chief of Defense Staff on December 31. The Investiture Ceremony of the transfer of the baton to the Chairman of Chiefs of Staff Committee (COAC) was postponed for the same day.

Earlier the event was scheduled to be held on Friday, but had to be postponed at the last minute. Army Chief General Bipin Rawat is retiring on 31 December. He was supposed to hand over the baton to Naval Chief Admiral Karambir Singh on Friday, which will now be done on the 31st.

Central cabinet has approved

A senior Indian Army official said that COSC consists of the Chiefs of the Army, Navy and Air Force. Of these, the senior-most officer is appointed in turn chairman until he retires. Since the Union Cabinet approved the post of CDS on 24 December, the name of General Bipin Rawat is now in the top position for discussion.
